Here’s a video on grips and how they relate to pronation/supination and strokes.

Arguably, the grip is considered the key foundation of building badminton skills. Consider:

  • Without proper grip technique, we cannot execute proper strokes (forehand, backhand, overhead, underhand, etc.)
  • Without proper strokes, we cannot create quality badminton shots (clears, drive, drop, smash, net shot, kills, blocks, etc.)
  • If we cannot create quality badminton shots, badminton strategies cannot be applied efficiently (eg. shot placement, opponent movement)
  • If the strategy cannot be applied, then tactics cannot be built to execute effective strategies (eg. shot building, offensive pressure)

Physical ability, and/or footwork can get us into advantageous tactical positions, but we cannot execute quality shots.

In addition, advanced techniques rely on the player having the basics mastered. Things like deceptions, slices, trick shots, etc. are all applications of the basic shots, but with slight changes leading to the point of shuttle impact.

It all starts with the grip!
