Community Use of Schools
The Timmins Porcupine Badminton Club meets in the gymnasium at R. Ross Beattie Public School, which is coordinated under District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) within their Community Use of Schools program.
2024/2025 Season Notes
- Membership/participation fees are waived for this season (yes, free!)
- Location is R. Ross Beattie Public School gymnasium (300 Pearl Avenue, Timmins, ON – MAP)
- All participants under 18 years of age must wear protective eyewear
General Membership Rules
Club guidelines are established to create a safe and friendly environment for sport while maintaining respect for the facility, equipment, and members.
- All Club members shall be 14 years of age or over
- Club membership fees are determined by the club executive
- All members are to have their registration information submitted online via the online registration form
- Members may invite guests to play and may be subject to drop-in fees
- All members and guests must submit the signed waiver in-person before playing
Dates and Times
- Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm
- All Club activity is to take place during scheduled dates and times, as posted on our calendar
- Any planned cancellations (ie. holidays, school activities, etc.) are published on our calendar and are to be respected
- Any unplanned cancellations (ie. weather, etc.) will be sent out via e-mail and posted to our Facebook Group
- Under no circumstances should any member proceed to play badminton under the guise of the Club during any canceled or unscheduled date and/or time at the venue
Setup / Take-down
- Entrance doors must be closed at all times. The door cannot be propped open for any reason
- Members should be mindful of the door for others waiting to enter
- Please ensure the door is closed once entering – the door may not close properly on its own
- Upon arrival, members should proceed to set up posts and badminton nets
- Courts should be swept prior to play
- Nylon club shuttles are carried with the Club equipment bag
- At the end of the evening, all nets and posts are to be taken down and placed in the appropriate storage area
- All shuttles are to be returned to the Club equipment bag
- The gymnasium should be checked to ensure no equipment is left out or left behind
- Any equipment, seats, etc., taken out or used should be stowed away/restored
- All waste is to be collected and put in waste bins
- All members must exit the school by the scheduled end time.
Badminton Equipment
- Members are encouraged to provide their own badminton equipment for play (ie. badminton racquets, grip, etc.)
- The Club has some badminton racquets available if needed, but is not a permanent provision
- Nylon shuttlecocks are provided by the Club
- Members may also use their own shuttles if they wish
- Feather shuttlecocks are not provided by the Club – members are to supply their own feather shuttlecocks
- Posts and nets are provided between the club and the school
Attire
- Participating members should dress in appropriate attire for playing badminton
- Shirts must be worn
- Only non-marking athletic court shoes are permitted on the court
- Outdoor shoes should be removed prior to walking on the courts
- Badminton goggles must be worn by all players under the age of 18
- Badminton goggles are not provided by the club
Etiquette
- Respect between members is to be maintained at all times
- Abusive, violent, and harassing behavior (physical, verbal, visual, etc.) will not be tolerated at any time
- The Club executive reserves the right to eject or banish members who exhibit inappropriate behavior
Play
- The 21-point rally system will be used to score sets
- Single sets are played to promote distributed court time
- Multi-set matches are permitted if attendance is low and court availability permits
- Doubles matches are prioritized
- Singles matches are allowed when attendance is low
- No referees or line judges are available – the honor system applies
- The eBadders system is utilized to manage matchups to promote court-time distribution, player mixing, and skill matching
